DFA 1979's 1st Reunion So Massive it Sparks Riot at SXSW

I can't even begin to describe how fucking crazy last night's Undocumented Management party at the Beauty Bar in Austin, TX was in full detail! But here is a shot at a little summary of events.

The night started off super well with superb sets from Felix Cartal, Harvard Bass, Bird Peterson and Run DMT. Then the "secret guest" took the stage, Toronto duo Death From Above 1979. Earlier that day DFA 1979 had announced via Twitter that they would be playing their first gig after an nearly a six years hiatus. Needless to say the crowd inside and outside of the venue where amped for the triumphant return of DFA. The small venue had around 200 people tightly packed into a space parking lot and the alley directly adjacent had upwards of 500.

About 20 minutes into the set the fans in the alley who had been banging on the fence and ripping down bushes desperately trying to get a view of the newly reunited DFA managed to completely tear down the fence. Austin PD on the premisses greeted the fans in the ally with tasers and industrial strength mace to prevent anyone in the alley from sneaking in (See Fence Come Down + Cops Tasers and Mace on Video). The kids in the front who got hit super hard were vomiting and convulsing on the ground with their teary eyes swollen shut from the mace.
There was a short intermission while the fence was tied back up and then the music and the mayhem started once again. Approximately 30 minutes after the fence came down Austin riot police brought four cars to block the alley and marched six horses through in an attempt to disperse the crowd. However, the spectacle only attracted more followers. The swelling crowd throwing insults, cans, cups and bottles at the cops would repeatedly push back to the fence as the horses finished their pass through the ally. Eventually cops on foot started making arrests clubbing and handcuffing fans who had thrown plastic cups or verbally assaulted the officers. After the arrests were made the police dispersed and the party outside continued on till the show eventually ended around 2:30.
All in all I can say this is one of the most memorable shows of my life and will go down in history as the savage return of dance-punk legends Death From Above. Please check out the videos of my favs from last night above and check out almost the entire DFA 1979 reunion set on Youtube.

I also got the chance to speak with JFK, Sebastian Grainger and Al-P (other half of MSTRKRFT) who was in attendance. They are all the nicest friendliest guys on earth and they all nodded at the notion that new DFA 1979 and MSTRKRFT is coming soon, along with a potential DFA 1979 cover of MSTRKRFT's new single Beards Again. Sooooooooo Sick!
UPDATE: Told you so, check out  a new MSTRKRFT track down below.

Felix Cartal absolutely killed it last night, bringing his massive sound super hard and getting a crowd that seemed mostly interested in DFA to bounce. I also got the chance to have a quick conversation with Taelor (Felix Cartal), who very graciously accepted my many praises.
If you are lucky enough to be in Austin tonight I highly recommend that you swing by the Dim Mak Party @ Republic tonight. The line-up features Felix Cartal, Mustard Pimp, Steve Aoki, Blaqstarr, Peacetreaty, Rob Roy, RAC and more.
If you couldn't make it to SXSW console yourself with this new banger Felix Cartal just released for the upcoming Mortal Kombat Album Executive Produced by none other than JFK himself. Enjoy!

Wait, Wait, Wait...Fuck

I hope all of you have been enjoying all the great music that has been coming out lately. I'm here to share with you some of the tunes I've been diggin' on for the past few days that might have slipped under the radar. First up I've got a new remix by Tokyo's Hierophant Green of his own track "Uh Lala" that has this real nice clubby dance vibe. I barely see many Japanese producers getting love and ever since Shinichi Osawa graced us with his masterful LP, "The One", I decided to keep my eyes out for talent from the land of the rising sun. Hierophant Green is more a pop producer but the tracks I'm putting up are examples of his groovier side. Check out the new remix and grab "Fxxxxn' Birthday" while you're at it.

Hierophant Green - Uh Lala (Self Remix) (192 kbps)
Hierophant Green - Fxxxxn' Birthday (192 kbps)

I know N.A.S.A.'s "Gifted" has been done to death and the remix I'm throwing up is living proof. This is not a remix of the original but a edit of a remix of the original. Ugh, just typing that makes me feel gross. I'll be honest, after Aoki's shot at the song I was about to swear off of the song entirely just because I was so sick of hearing Kanye talk. But that's the best part of fellow blogger DSCO's edit of Technocracy favorite Aston Shuffle's remix. No Kanye. It's all built around Lykke Li's singing so it feels fresher and more original. Pick it up.

N.A.S.A. feat. Kanye West, Santogold & Lykke Li - Gifted (The Aston Shuffle Remix) (DSCO EDIT) (320 kbps)

To finish up I've got some remixes of some stellar rap songs that really meld with the electro fools mapping the songs behind them. TC, though he may be hit and miss, came through with a remix of Bruno Mar's crooning through B.o.B.'s "Nothin' on You". Given how annoying that song is normally, I was impressed he made is actually listenable, even enjoyable. Give it a chance till around 2:00 when the beat really drops. And definitely peep this Wale song remixed by "Bird Peterson". While it might not be as heavy as usual Bird Peterson work, it is one of the smoothest songs I've heard in a real long time. Enjoy that with your girl or boy and get real close. With that I'm out.

P-H-O-E-N-I-X

Phoenix played here in Portland's Crystal Ballroom on Sunday and we were lucky enough to get in. The crowd was huge and the show was sold out pretty quickly which was impressive. The show was epic and, honestly, much better than I expected. For becoming basically a pop band they played one hell of a show and changed around the songs well enough. They switched up Everything is Everything into this really slow, mellow number which was pretty decent. It's hard to complain when they played basically everything I wanted to hear, old and new. Definitely covered my favorites: Armistice, Run, If I Ever Feel Better, and a really wicked dirty version of Funky Squaredance. Phoenix has been getting pretty big lately, especially after the release of Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, which unleashed wave after wave of remixes. I'll admit it, I was sick of hearing new versions of Lisztomania and 1901 after the 3 months in which basically every blog had a new remix on every page. So in true original fashion, I'm doing one as well.

I'm not going to put up the original Lisztomania or 1901 because you should have them already. Honestly, feel a little shame. They're great songs. Seriously. But in case you've wanted to check out some great remixes pick these up. Alex Metric does a great job with Lisztomania, as does Classixx. The Friendly Fires Fences is awesome too. Both of the 1901 songs are great too, but not astounding. If you're bored of the original check them out. Otherwise you'll be alright. I've also thrown up If I Ever Feel Better and Armistice because they are by far my favorite songs, both catchy and fun as hell.

Phoenix - Lisztomania (Alex Metric Remix) (224 kbps)
Phoenix - Lisztomania (Classixx Remix) (202 kbps)
Phoenix - Fences (Friendly Fires Remix) (320 kbps)

Phoenix - 1901(The Garage Band Teenagers Remix) (192 kbps)
Phoenix - 1901 (What Kind of Breeze Do You Blow _E-Mix) (320 kbps)

Phoenix - If I Ever Feel Better (128 kbps)
Phoenix - Armistice (160 kbps)
Sick show Phoenix. Come back to Portland again.

Bonus:
Ocelot - Our Time (Bird Peterson Remix) (320 kbps)
(The original song is definitely something you should pick up but Bird Peterson lays some glitchy bass lines that add some grime. Give it a listen.)
